BEACH CLEAN-UP DRAWING SPONSORS AND PUBLIC SUPPORT

Stoked on Salt prepares for its TURTLE NESTING BEACH CLEAN-UP on Lauderdale-by-the-Sea Beach

DATE:  March 21, Saturday

TIME:  9am - Noon

WHERE:  Lauderdale-by-the-Sea Beach - adjacent to El Prado Park

AFTER PARTY:  Noon to 7:00PM @ TURTLE FEST

INFO: www.stokedonsalt.com  & Facebook Page: SOS Ocean Clean-Up

Stoked on Salt, Inc.,  a local woman-owned company has joined the national effort Project AWARE Foundation  (Aquatic World Awareness Responsibility and Education) to host a Beach and Shoreline Clean-up on Saturday, March 21st from 9 am to Noon on Lauderdale-by-the-Sea Beach (4500 El Mar Drive).  The event will bring together scuba divers, snorkelers, local dive and surf shops, concerned environmental groups and the general public to be a part of protecting the ocean, waterways and shoreline.  Following the Clean-up is a Volunteer Awards & After Party at the Quarterdeck Restaurant on East Las Olas Blvd. until 4 pm.  Raffles will benefit the BioRock Project at Lauderdale by the Sea. (Artificial Reef).

To kick off the morning, Erika Lima Yoga will hold a free Yoga-on-the-Beach class beginning at 9:00a.m.  Registration will be held at the Castaway Clean-Outs Tent located on the beach.  First 100 volunteers will receive a free SOS Ocean Clean Up volunteers bag and free prize give-aways.  All students will receive volunteer hours.

"Joining Project AWARE was a natural way to begin this effort with fellow scuba divers - one dive at a time.   We as snorkelers and divers spend a great deal of time in the water and see the short and long term changes in the aquatic environment," said Lisa Miceli-Capano, organizer and owner of Stoked on Salt.  "We all have an important responsibility to protect the environment whenever we interact with it."

Project AWARE is designed to engage snorkelers and divers in activities such as beach cleanups, waterway cleanups, establishing marine parks and protected areas and pushing for legislative action to protect endangered marine habitats and species.   With new programs and more online resources than ever before, Project AWARE supports an unprecedented global movement of divers acting in their own communities to protect oceans and implement lasting change by taking local action and supporting the policy change necessary to prevent and reduce rubbish entering our ocean.

"The rubbish removed makes the ocean safer for marine life and the information reported can help convince individuals, governments and businesses to act against marine debris. The trash accumulating in the ocean, floating in the waterways and on the shoreline -  is turning our beautiful beaches, State Parks and reefs into “rubbish dumps" and together we can change and work towards a clean, healthy ocean planet", states Miceli-Capano.   Every year tens of thousands of marine animals and seabirds die from eating or getting tangled in marine debris.

Bring your family and friends for a fun day on the beach. Afterwards enjoy a free day at the Lauderdale-by-the-Sea TURTLE FEST. While having a great time in our Florida sunshine, everyone will be helping to contribute to a clean, healthy ocean and shoreline.  Students participating will receive credit for community hours.
